StudentResearch Tutorial
Learn how to research like a pro! Now that you're in college you will be required by your instructors to research on a whole new level.

Sleeping StudentBecoming a research expert doesn't happen overnight...
Just like any other skill set, it takes time and practice. The more research you do, the more comfortable you'll become with searching, selecting, and evaluating information. The Research Tutorial will get you started with becoming a research expert.

COM students have many different levels of research skills. For instance, some students will already feel comfortable on the Internet and others tell us that they have never surfed the Web before. Regardless of the level of skill you currently have, this tutorial will help ensure that you will be able to find, evaluate and cite the information you need to complete your course work at the college level.Student success

The Research Tutorial Works!
After reading the modules and performing the exercises on the Research Tutorial Quiz, all students say that they learned something new. 94% of COM students felt satisfied that they could find books, articles and Internet resources in COM Library. On the other hand, 75% of those who found the exercises too difficult had not read the modules.

What's in the Research Tutorial
The tutorial is made up of modules and a Research Tutorial Quiz. Each module will help you learn how to use different resources in COM Library. There is really just too much information to learn all at once, so we recommend that each module be done separately, in the following order: Getting Started with Research, Information Ethics, Books, Articles, and Internet rather than all in one session. Begin by clicking on the first module:

  1. Getting Started with Research
Learn how to navigate COM Library Web pages, choose your research topic, develop your topic, and gather your information.
  2. Information Ethics
Learn how to evaluate your sources, cite them, and about plagiarism and copyright.
  3. Books
Learn how to search COM Library's catalog, locate books in COM Library, find eBooks, and get books from other libraries
  4. Articles
Learn how to find articles in Print Indexes and online databases in COM Library.
  5. Internet Resources
Learn how to use directories, search engines, meta search engines and invisible web resources to find information on the Internet.
  6. Research Tutorial Quiz
Perform exercises that give you a chance to use the information you learned in the Research Tutorial. You will need to print out the Research Tutorial Quiz, select your answers and hand them in to your instructor.*

* DE students: If you are taking your class through Blackboard, your instructor has provided instructions on how to take the Research Tutorial quiz within your Blackboard class.
